Dedicated Accident Solicitors, are proud to announce that we are now patrons of the British Lung Foundation’s (BLF) mesothelioma fund.
We have made a significant donation to the work of the fund, helping to provide support, practical help and advice to the thousands of people every year that are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a highly aggressive form of cancer related to asbestos exposure.
Established in 1984 by a group of lung specialists in the UK, the BLF is a charity with the aim of promoting lung health and supporting those affected by lung disease. The mesothelioma research fund enables the BLF to invest in research into mesothelioma treatments, raise awareness of the disease and provide support to all those suffering from mesothelioma, and their families. Over the next 30 years, an estimated 60,000 people will die from mesothelioma, unless new treatments are found.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that grows in the membrane that surrounds the lungs and is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. 80% of mesothelioma cases occur in men, reflecting the greater likelihood of men having worked with asbestos in heavy industry or the armed forces. It usually takes several decades after the exposure to asbestos before any symptoms are experienced, meaning the news of a mesothelioma diagnosis can come as a huge shock to victims and their families. This is where the support of charities such as the BLF, and from legal specialists in this area such as Dedicated Accident Solicitors, can make a big difference to many people’s lives.
As specialists in this area of the law, we can investigate whether there is a case for the family to receive financial compensation for the asbestos exposure that caused the mesothelioma and assist with claims for payments from government benefit schemes. If the victim was exposed through their job, as was often the case, when no warnings or protective equipment were offered, it is sometimes possible to bring a claim against that employer, even if they are no longer in business. Whilst compensation cannot change the diagnosis, it can help to give victims and their families a sense of justice and a measure of peace of mind about their financial future.
John Das, director of Dedicated Accident Solicitors and accredited by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) as an asbestos claim specialist, commented: “I’m absolutely delighted to become a patron of the fantastic work that the British Lung Foundation’s mesothelioma fund do to help victims of this horrible asbestos-related disease. Having represented many sufferers of mesothelioma in successful asbestos claims, I’ve seen first-hand the horrific impact that it has on the lives of the victims and their families. That’s why the team at Dedicated Accident Solicitors do what we do, and together with partners like the BLF mesothelioma fund, we know that we can make a real difference for those going through a terrible time because of someone else’s negligence or dereliction of duty.”
Ian Jarrold, Head of Research at the British Lung Foundation, said: “Mesothelioma is a terrible disease that affects thousands of people in the UK. It is almost always fatal and there is currently no cure.
“We’re so grateful to Dedicated Accident Solicitors for their generous contribution. It’s thanks to our fantastic patrons, and everyone who donates to the BLF, that we’re able to invest in much needed research, and give hope, help and a voice to patients with mesothelioma across the UK.”
